A Heart of FaithHjerte af tro

Sometimes you stare at what you can see. The bill. The test result. The thing that didn't work out. And you think that's the last word.

But what if what you can see isn't the whole picture at all?

Our own band, Åbenlovsang, has just written a new song. It's called "A Heart of Faith." The chorus goes like this:

Your kingdom come, Your will be done / Let me see heaven, heaven on earth / Your presence come / Give me a heart of faith

Notice the names in the verses: Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Rahab, Moses, David. That's no accident. It's the whole faith chapter of the Bible, Hebrews 11, set to music.

And it starts with a question: What is faith, really?

"What is faith? Faith is the foundation of our hope, a conviction about things that cannot be seen." (Hebrews 11:1)

Notice what it doesn't say. It doesn't say that faith is understanding. It doesn't say that faith is feeling something strongly. It says: a conviction about things that cannot be seen.

In 1961 the Soviet Union sent the first cosmonaut into space. When he came back down, he was quoted as saying he'd seen no sign of God out there. A few years later, the American astronaut John Glenn sat in his spacecraft and said the exact opposite: "I saw God everywhere." Same space. Same darkness. Two completely different reports. One set of eyes could see only the visible. The other could also see the invisible.

That's what faith is. Seeing what cannot yet be seen.

That's how they all were. Noah built a boat in dry weather while the neighbors laughed. Abraham left home without an address. Rahab had the worst starting point in town and one of the strongest faith stories in the whole chapter. David stood with a sling in front of a giant and saw what no one else in the army could see. None of them saw the whole picture. They saw only the next step. But they walked, because they kept the Invisible One in view.

That's exactly what the song prays for. Not more proof. Not more that can be seen. Just one thing: a heart of faith.

What could become visible in your life if you dared to believe the invisible before you see it?

Nogle gange stirrer man på det, man kan se. Regningen. Prøvesvaret. Det, der ikke lykkedes. Og man tænker, at det er det sidste ord.

Men hvad nu, hvis det, du kan se, slet ikke er hele billedet?

Vores eget band, Åbenlovsang, har lige skrevet en ny sang. Den hedder "Hjerte af tro". Omkvædet lyder sådan:

Komme Dit rige, komme Din vilje / Lad mig se himmel, himmel på jord / Komme Dit nærvær / Giv mig et hjerte af tro

Læg mærke til navnene i versene: Abel, Enok, Noa, Abraham, Rahab, Moses, David. Det er ikke tilfældigt. Det er hele troskapitlet i Bibelen, Hebræerbrevet 11, sat på melodi.

Og det starter med et spørgsmål: Hvad er tro, egentlig?

"Hvad er tro? Tro er grundlaget for vores håb, en overbevisning om ting, der ikke kan ses." (Hebr 11,1 — BPH)

Læg mærke til, hvad der ikke står. Der står ikke, at tro er at forstå. Der står ikke, at tro er at føle noget stærkt. Der står: en overbevisning om ting, der ikke kan ses.

I 1961 sendte Sovjetunionen den første kosmonaut i rummet. Da han kom ned, blev han citeret for at sige, at han ikke havde set noget tegn på Gud derude. Nogle år senere sad den amerikanske astronaut John Glenn i sit rumfartøj og sagde det stik modsatte: "Jeg så Gud overalt." Samme rum. Samme mørke. To vidt forskellige rapporter. For det ene sæt øjne kunne kun se det synlige. Det andet kunne også se det usynlige.

Det er det, tro er. At se det, der endnu ikke kan ses.

Sådan var de alle sammen. Noa byggede en båd i tørvejr, mens naboerne lo. Abraham gik hjemmefra uden en adresse. Rahab havde byens dårligste udgangspunkt og en af de stærkeste tro-historier i hele kapitlet. David stod med en slynge foran en kæmpe og så, hvad ingen andre i hæren kunne se. Ingen af dem så hele billedet. De så kun det næste skridt. Men de gik, fordi de holdt den Usynlige for øje.

Det er præcis det, sangen beder om. Ikke mere bevis. Ikke mere, der kan ses. Bare ét: et hjerte af tro.
